Dell Technologies World As A Service
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
Enabling innovation at scale with Data, AI and Cloud Computing
Last week Dell Technologies delivered Dell Technologies World 2020. Dozens of thousands of technologists, business leaders, analysts and influencers watched the virtual event from home instead of flocking to Vegas this year. While we all missed the in-person experiences and networking, it was still a great opportunity to connect and learn.
On the keynote, Michael Dell, Dell Technologies CEO and Chairman, brought his perspectives of 2020, the challenges with the pandemic, the global acceleration to digital and the potential that technology has to change the world. His optimism is contagious and set the tone for the event and upcoming announcements.
MSD was followed by Jeff Clarke, Dell Technologies COO and Vice-Chairman, who went over the recently revamped portfolio. Earlier this year, Dell Technologies announced PowerStore, PowerScale and PowerFlex, and fully "Powered Up" all families of products.
Jeff Clarke also shared his view of the future of IT, with a focus on the explosive growth of the Edge and, quoting IDC, the fact that "75% of Edge infrastructure will be consumed as a service" by 2024.
John Roese, Dell Technologies Global CTO, finally described how the company will focus on enabling Edge Computing, 5G, Data Management, AI, Multi-Cloud and Security, to help customers and partners accelerate their journeys to a digital future.
The event had fantastic speakers, a TED Salon and a great performance of the Black Pumas, now playing non-stop on my playlist! And all sessions are available On Demand, which brings me to the main topic here...
Project APEX: Dell Technologies As A Service
Project APEX was the biggest announcement of the event. APEX puts Dell Technologies on the path of Everything As A Service. This is a huge shift for the company, but very aligned to the trends discussed on the Keynote session.
Read the APEX Press Release:
And the APEX Corporate Blog:
In summary, APEX aims to simplify how customers and partners access Dell’s as-a-service portfolio, from servers and HCI to PCs and client offerings, starting with the launch of Dell Technologies Storage as a Service next year.
The company also introduced the Dell Technologies Cloud Console, a portal where customers will be able to have a unified experience of their Cloud and As A Service assets.
Additionally, Dell has expanded its Cloud and as-a-Service offerings with new services, including Cloud Platform instance-based offerings, where customers can get started with hybrid cloud for as low as $47 per instance per month with subscription pricing, and Cloud PowerProtect for Multi-cloud, a fully-managed service designed to help customers protect their public cloud-based data and applications via a low latency connection to major public cloud platforms.
IT As A Service needs IT On Demand
Developers and business users want IT As A Service to match the need for agility. A flexible consumption model allows greater alignment between how IT builds and serves infrastructure, and how users consume these resources.
As enterprise systems become more distributed and technology services reach the Edge, this shift will become even more critical.
The announcement of Project APEX shows that Dell Technologies is very aligned to this vision.
