Hi everyone!

I'm Erin Gaffey from the Solution Integration team at Canada Post. Many people ask me about dimensions and how parcels are charged. Depending on your shipping software, you can input weight and dimensions in either metric (kilograms and centimeters) or imperial (pounds and inches). The software converts imperial measurements to metric since Canada Post only accepts metric.

Now, let's dive deeper into volumetric weight. It's important to note that parcel size matters, especially for large, lightweight items. In such cases, the actual weight isn't used for the shipping rate; instead, you are billed based on the volumetric or dimensional weight. Volumetric weight is calculated based on how much room the shipment takes up. Your shipping rate is charged based on the higher of the two. When purchasing boxes and bags for shipping, be sure to determine their volumetric weight to optimize your costs.

While Canada Post doesn't typically require dimensions to be entered, you are ultimately charged based on volumetric or dimensional weight. On your invoice, you would see two entries: the first one based on the weight you declared, and a second entry with the dimensions and the volumetric weight.
