The Concrete Centre provides design and construction guidance to construction professionals regarding the specification, design, and use of concrete in the UK. A significant focus of our work is on improving the environmental performance of developments using concrete. This includes promoting lower-carbon mixes, lean design strategies, optimizing thermal mass to reduce energy use, and designing for durability.
We are also instrumental in accelerating progress through collaboration, driving further improvements, and sharing innovations. Concrete is essential for achieving a resilient, net-zero built environment, and we are committed to raising awareness and expertise to help make a difference.
Delivering a legacy of quality net zero homes
The government has committed to delivering the most ambitious housebuilding programme in two generations. This is a welcome and important initiative. However, in constructing 1.5 million new homes, we must ensure that this new generation of properties deliver homes which embed the necessary performance to be truly sustainable. The recent impacts of Storm Bert have highlighted the urgent need to put climate resilience at the heart of our built environment.
We're making an Impact by helping to make continued advancements in the sustainable production and use of concrete across the UK.?
Here are some highlights of recent positive action we have taken to make an impact:
This refreshed strategy builds on 15 years of industry progress, addressing the significant economic, social, and environmental changes that have occurred during that time. It sets ambitious commitments in key areas: Carbon, Circular Economy, the Natural Environment, and Social Value. We look forward to sharing updates on the progress already underway, developed in collaboration with the value chain and built environment partners. ?
The findings of this study underscored the significant potential of UK sourced, reclaimed clays and finely ground bricks as lower-carbon supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Of the new cements trialled in the project - one has a CO2 profile 40-60% lower than CEM I. If fully deployed this would result in a reduction in direct emissions from cement production of over 4 million tonnes of CO2 every year. A summary of the findings, along with details of funding and industry partners, is available here. ? ?
This year, five new verified, full life cycle sector EPDs were published by the MPA for C28/35 ready-mixed concretes. These are based on representative concrete mix designs specified in accordance with BS 8500-2 and BS EN 206. These EPDs enable designers to make informed early-stage design decisions before a specific product or manufacturer is chosen. Sector EPDs for additional concrete products are planned for publication next year. Guidance and links to existing sector EPDs for concrete can be found here.
Last year one of the key areas of the guidance we were sharing at Futurebuild was the updated BS 8500 and its new possibilities for lower carbon concrete. As well as publications and in our exhibit, ?presentations were given by colleagues on the Materials stage. The huge crowds who gathered to hear them demonstrated that this is an important topic for specifiers of concrete and, indeed, anyone interested in the lowering of carbon in concrete.

The Concrete Centre has exhibited at Futurebuild since its very first year. Through its Concrete Futures exhibition we display a range of innovation, research and development being carried out by concrete and cement manufacturers. ?It is always interesting and useful to discover other innovation on display in the FutureX Innovation area. And even better to catchup with the people behind concrete products we have featured, to network and extol the benefits of these products.
It was excellent to spend time talking to the students visiting our stand as part of their ‘Materials and Design Exchange’ treasure hunt for students. They were so engaged with sustainability in the built environment and asked many inciteful questions.
