The Delicate Balance of Leading a Charity
Whilst recruiting exclusively within the charities sector I’ve seen firsthand the complex balancing act faced by charity CEOs and executive directors. They bear the heavy responsibility of managing day-to-day operations, long-term strategy, and the needs of all stakeholders. This includes staff, volunteers, clients, donors, and a board of trustees. With so many priorities to juggle, leading a charity can feel like walking a tightrope without a safety net.
The most successful charity leaders I’ve encountered employ a variety of strategies to maintain equilibrium and alignment across the organisation. Here are some of the key lessons I’ve learned from these inspirational leaders:
Prioritise Open Communication: Maintaining open channels of communication is crucial, but not always easy when leaders face overwhelming workloads. Still, regular check-ins must happen to foster mutual understanding. Whether it’s weekly updates to the board or monthly all-staff meetings, transparency across all levels enables collaboration. And collaboration is vital when balancing competing needs.
Make Time for Active Listening: Communication cannot flow only one way. Leaders must actively listen to all groups, from clients to program staff to board members. Each has on-the-ground insights. A CEO seen as engaged and approachable will earn trust and gain information to make wise decisions. This takes humility - leaders must first understand different viewpoints before finding solutions.
Aim for Organisational Alignment: With strong communication flows and mutual understanding, leaders can align stakeholders around shared goals. This unity provides direction amidst competing priorities. Regular strategic planning with staff and boards re-centres everyone on the charity’s core mission and values. And concrete objectives give focus to daily operations. Alignment doesn’t remove all tensions, but it prevents mission drift.
Be Ready to Compromise: Perfect alignment is rare. Organisational needs won’t always mesh seamlessly with board expectations. Healthy debate is good, but gridlock helps no one. Once all perspectives are heard, compromise must occur. Leaders must determine which trade-offs produce the optimal mix of results. Whether it’s modified timelines, budget adjustments, or phased rollouts, flexibility and nuance keep things moving forward.
Share Both Risks and Wins: Transparency is key, but many leaders highlight wins while downplaying risks. This skews perceptions. CEOs must report setbacks, close calls, and red flags, not just successes. Of course, balance is required - alarmism helps no one. But when boards have an accurate picture, they provide better guidance. And staff also benefit from understanding the realities faced at other levels.
Empower Others: No CEO can perfectly manage all aspects of a charity alone. That’s why effective leaders empower others. Delegation must occur based on skills and bandwidth. And managers need authority over their domains. But accountability and coordination are still needed. Regular check-ins on performance metrics and goal progress keep things integrated. And oversight ensures activities align with organizational values.
Make Time for Self-Care: The constant needs of a charity can easily become all-consuming. Leaders often neglect their own well-being. But this is unsustainable. Without time for reflection, relationships, and renewal, burnout is inevitable. By modelling balanced lifestyles, leaders also give staff permission to prioritise self-care. This maintains passion and performance over the long-term.
Though demand grows, resources shrink, and crises arise, the right strategies allow charity executives to manage it all. With compassion, courage and wisdom, they walk the tightrope successfully year after year. It takes relentless effort, but the impact makes it worthwhile. Their nonprofits change lives, families, and entire communities for the better.
