Delhi’s Air Quality: Breathing 49 Cigarettes a Day?

Imagine breathing in pollution so harmful it’s like smoking 49 cigarettes in just one day.?

That’s the harsh reality for people living in Delhi-NCR. On November 18, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) hit a disturbing 978, putting the air in the “hazardous” category.

What’s causing this? A mix of firecrackers, stubble burning, and vehicle emissions has been choking Delhi’s air since late October. The deteriorating air quality poses serious health risks, leading to respiratory issues, heart problems, and a decrease in overall life expectancy. It’s like smoking without holding a cigarette!

In response to this crisis, GRAP Stage IV, the strictest level of the Graded Response Action Plan, has been imposed. This includes a halt on non-essential construction, limits on driving vehicles, and encouragement for remote working to reduce emissions. Schools, except for grades 10 and 12, have shifted to online classes, emphasising the urgency of the situation.

What can you do? For now, try to stay indoors, use an air purifier, and wear an N95 mask when stepping out. These small measures can help reduce your exposure to the harmful air.

The bigger picture? We need long-term solutions like cleaner energy, better waste management, and fewer emissions. Pollution isn’t just a seasonal issue, it’s a problem that affects our health every day.

It’s time for everyone, government, businesses, and citizens, to take action.?

The numbers are shocking, but the real question is: how long will we let our cities suffocate? It’s time to take action for cleaner air, because every breath matters.

What steps are you taking to combat pollution? Let’s discuss in the comments!?
