Delegation Triggers

Delegation Triggers

There are many delegation triggers that indicate when it’s important for a manager to delegate tasks to staff members.

Delegation Triggers

It is appropriate and necessary to delegate when:

Too Much On Your Plate

  1. You are burning out because you have more on your plate than you can reasonably handle in the time available.
  2. A new assignment means you can no longer perform some of your current functions.
  3. You are spending too much time on operations or technical work, taking away from your two primary managerial roles of getting results through people and assisting your employees to succeed.
  4. It costs too much for you to do it.

Lack of Expertise or Time

  1. There is a need to do something that you do not have the time or expertise to do.
  2. Someone else can do it as well or better than you can.
  3. You might do it poorly because of lack of time due to other duties.???????????
  4. Another employee can do it adequately for the cost or time involved.
  5. An employee cannot do it as well, but you doing it interferes with something more important.

Development Potential

  1. You see developmental potential in employees.
  2. An employee makes a developmental request.
  3. A project or task will be useful for developing an employee, if costs and time permit and if you can afford the risk.

Productivity and Programs

  1. Productivity needs to be improved by having those closest to the issues authorized to make decisions.
  2. A reorganization creates new programs and tasks.
