Delegating, what you're not doing to make your team better!

Delegating, what you're not doing to make your team better!

Delegating is a huge thing for any leader to effectively manage an organization. What I find many times is that a leader won't let go of something and if they do it's because they are over capacity. I'd encourage you to audit your delegation process.

If you're a business owner here is a simple 5 Step framework for you:

First break down what needs to be done and have an accountable person to it. I am all about who figure how's they'll usually do it better than someone with attention divided.

Second pick the right person for the job, sounds simple but when you have a million things going on this can be round robin or shark tank distribution. You need to map it out and play to people's strengths.

Third DEFINE A SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE DELEGATED TASK. Why all caps? This is where so many people trip up and they say I need this completed. Well in this example there is no deadline, there is no specifics or basic instructions. The more you clearly define what success looks like not only will you be happier in completion but your setting your people up for success too

Provide Support, STUFF HAPPENS. People are people, and they human from time to time. This is an opportunity to show you got their back when they are struggling, maybe it's their first time doing it, maybe even it's something new to the organization, give them permission as long as there is effort to fail. You'll be happy you did.

Finally, Keep a compelling scoreboard- From the four disciplines of execution this is huge. When a hockey team puts the puck in the net the horn sound, the lamp lights, and the crowd roars as a point shows on the board. Well in my industry we don't have that, so you need to recreate it, in my office we use cowbells, and when you hear a cowbell you know something awesome happened!

I hope this helps you, if you're in the owner chair your doing your team a disservice not to empower them, just handing them work isn't the answer though, if you can make it where they win, it becomes we win, and that is fun!
