DELANY ON LEADERSHIP: PRAISE AS MOTIVATOR
DELANY ON LEADERSHIP: PRAISE AS MOTIVATOR
Praise and more specifically genuine praise is a most powerful motivator for leaders.?It is frequently an underutilized super-power of leaders and leadership
The leader who delivers praise in a rote, insincere or trite manner will fail to inspire because the team will view it as meaningless or something worse depending on the situation.?A leader who is too effusive in their praise can demean its value.
The most effective praise is honest, authentic, focused, timely and accurate.?Praise should reinforce the team’s mission and values.
During this “Great Resignation” turnover, one of the top reasons cited by ?employees who were leaving is because they didn’t feel appreciated.?As leaders, what can we learn from this feedback??What is the best course of action for us now and going forward?
Praise can be delivered publicly or privately or both.?Praise delivered publicly can be motivational to the recipient and to the team.?Public praise also has a tendency to motivate others in the larger environment.?Knowing that your work can be celebrated is a powerful motivator.
Successful leaders work hard to create a positive and supportive environment for their team.?Be on the lookout for opportunities to celebrate your team’s accomplishments.?Be generous with praise that is honest, authentic, focused, timely and accurate.?Be kind to one another for we are in this together!
