DELANY ON LEADERSHIP: COACHING PERSONAL CONFIDENCE

I read a meaningful quote the other day, “There are plenty of difficult objects in your path. Don’t allow yourself to become one of them.”

Everyone has strengths.?But not everyone is confident of their strengths, nor have they even identified them.?Many, even the most poised of us, experience self-doubt when we encounter a challenging issue.?Some are paralyzed by it.?Some work through it.

As leader, one of the most valuable roles you can engage in is to be a coach to those on your team.?What is a coach??According to basketball legend, Michael Jackson, “A coach is someone who sees beyond your limits and guides you to greatness.”?Identifying people’s strengths, supporting them and then instilling in them self-confidence is a fundamental skill for leaders, and arguably the most valuable.

As Jackson states, the best coaches take mentoring a step further – guiding teams beyond what they see as limitations.?Ultimately that evolution enables the team to breakthrough to another, previously unimaginable level of exceptionalism.
