Deja Vu -- Pandemic again!
- I lost my great grandfather and two great uncles to the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1919. I didn't know that when I experienced the Asian flu pandemic of 1956-1957. It to was born in China. I was on security duty at the Clarksville, Tennessee, "Birdcage" as it was called by the nearby Fort Campbell "Screaming Eagles," The name came from our highly secret nuclear materials stored there.
- I was a corporal at the time. We circled the facility in pickup trucks with rifles and pistols, We patrolled both the perimeter fence and the interior area where numerous bunkers stored America's secrets and wild deer roamed keeping the grass down.
- I woke up one morning to the noise of Marines rapidly moving canvas cots into the Day Room. Medics were taking temperatures as rapidly as they could. The medics rushed all the high temp Marines onto the cots. My "normal" temp is 96 degrees but I hit 102. "On duty," the medic called out. Those with 103 and above were quarantined and treated, The rest of us grabbed our gear and went on patrol until we were relieved.
- I was nineteen at the time. I didn't take the situation very seriously. I didn't know that the flu hit primarily school children, pregnant women and young adults. There were 69,900 to 70,000 deaths in the United States and 2 million worldwide. to learn more: https://www.globalsecurity.org/.../hsc-scen-3_pandemic...
- I urge you to read the chart above that compares the different approaches of two cities during the Spanish pandemic. Notice that the city that responded early "flattened the curve" (less deaths) while the city that failed to respond suffered many more deaths.????????
- Take care of yourself. God loves you and so do I.
