Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers
An outbreak of 196 Salmonella infections across 28 states is linked through epidemiological data to cucumbers grown in Florida.?Currently, Salmonella Africana is considered the outbreak strain.?However, CDC and FDA are investigating an outbreak with similar onset times and demographics involving 185 illnesses from Salmonella Braenderup to determine if it is also linked to the same cucumbers.?The recalled cucumbers were shipped in bulk cartons directly to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors in AL, FL, GA, IL, MD, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, and WV from May 17th through May 21st, 2024.
FDA’s Reorganization Goes Into Effect October 1, 2024
On May 13, 2024, the FDA’s Office of the Commissioner announced the approval of an agency-wide reorganization, the biggest restructuring of FDA in 70 years.?The reorganization took into account the 2022 findings and recommendations proposed by the Reagan-Udall Foundation that studied FDA’s functions, culture, efficiencies, and capabilities to protect the public health.?
Congratulations - They’ve Done It Again!
Food Protection Trends’ Most-Viewed General Interest Publication Award has gone to the members of the Verification/Validation Subgroup of IAFP’s Analytical Methods Professional Development Group for the third time. The 2024 award is for their article entitled “Evaluating Microbiological Method Equivalence – A Decision Guide” published in the May/June 2023 issue of Food Protection Trends. ?Members of the Subgroup include industry and regulatory experts, including professionals from Deibel Laboratories.?This article is part of a series discussing validation of new food matrices for use with accredited rapid methods.?The focus has been on determining a more practical approach for conducting these types of studies.
