Is DEI Over? Why Diversity and Inclusion Are More Critical Than Ever

We've been having more and more conversations with DEI experts in our community, to discuss the consequences and steps forward from the recent rhetoric, policy changes and sentiment around DEI. Based on these conversations, our team at FemTechConf? and our Co-Founder Luisa R. wrote this piece on why DEI is more critical than ever.

In recent months, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have come under increasing scrutiny, with high-profile companies scaling back their programs. Google, Walmart and more are among those reducing their DEI efforts, citing political pressure, legal risks, and activist backlash (Business Insider). However, despite these rollbacks, the need for DEI is greater than ever, both as a moral imperative and a business necessity.

The Consequences of Anti-DEI Rhetoric

When we hear calls to "blame DEI" for corporate struggles, economic downturns, or hiring shifts, what is truly being communicated is far more insidious: You don’t belong here. It suggests that certain spaces should remain exclusive, that inclusion is an error rather than an achievement. The underlying message is clear—if you are here, it must be a mistake, because you are deemed unqualified or undeserving. Beyond that, your very presence is seen as disruptive to the status quo.

The narrative that DEI lowers standards is not just false—it is dangerous. It undermines the achievements of women and underrepresented communities who have fought to be where they are. The suggestion that those benefiting from DEI programs are unqualified is an attack on their capabilities and legitimacy in professional spaces. It perpetuates exclusion and fosters environments that resist progress rather than embrace it.

The Business Case for DEI

Despite these attacks, the data consistently shows that diverse organizations are more successful. A McKinsey report found that companies in the top quartile for ethnic diversity were 39% more likely to experience above-average profitability (McKinsey). Companies that prioritize DEI also report:

  • Higher Employee Engagement and Retention – Employees who feel included and valued are more likely to stay, reducing turnover costs and improving company culture.
  • Stronger Financial Performance – Studies have shown a direct correlation between inclusive work environments and increased innovation, revenue, and efficiency.
  • Better Decision-Making – Diverse teams bring varied perspectives, leading to 87% better decision-making outcomes compared to homogeneous teams (Berkshire Associates).

Why We Must Continue to Fight for DEI

Organisations that remain committed to DEI are setting themselves up for long-term success. The NFL, for instance, continues to embrace diversity, seeing it as a cornerstone of innovation and community connection (Wall Street Journal).

We cannot allow the backlash to DEI efforts to erase the progress we have made. The movement toward diversity and inclusion is not a political stance—it is a necessary shift toward equity and fairness. We know that DEI programs create opportunities, foster talent, and empower individuals who have historically been denied a seat at the table. To dismantle these initiatives is to turn back the clock on years of progress.

Now, more than ever, we must reaffirm our commitment to DEI. Not because it is trendy, not because it is performative, but because it is right. And because businesses, industries, and entire economies thrive when they are built on inclusivity, not exclusion.

DEI is not over. It is just beginning.
