DEI Is More Than Just Gender

DEI Is More Than Just Gender

When people think of DEI, they only focus on gender equality, but it’s about so much more. Inclusion means making sure EVERYONE — no matter their ability, background, or access to resources—has equal opportunities.

? People with disabilities make up 15% of the global population (over 1 billion people), yet many still struggle to find employment or access basic services. In fact, only 28% of working-age people with disabilities are employed, compared to 78% of people without disabilities.

? Financial inclusion is another key part of DEI. Around 1.4 billion adults worldwide don’t have access to bank accounts, loans, or credit. Without these resources, people in underserved communities can’t save money, invest, or even handle emergencies properly.

? Digital inclusion is as critical. Nearly 3 billion people still lack access to the internet, which limits their ability to learn, work, or connect with others. In today’s world, not having access to technology is a major barrier to inclusion.

So, when we talk about DEI, it is so much more than gender. It is about all forms of exclusion that takes place all the time and managing that.?

We are talking about people with disabilities, those without access to financial tools, people in low-income areas without the internet, and many others who are often overlooked.

How can we expand DEI beyond the usual::

→ Make workplaces more accessible for people with disabilities by offering flexible hours, remote work options, and adaptive technologies.

→ Partner with financial institutions to offer services to underserved communities, so they can have the financial tools to succeed.

→ Invest in digital inclusion efforts by providing internet access and digital skills training in low-income areas.

→ Expand hiring practices to be more inclusive of neurodiverse individuals and people from different cultural backgrounds.

The goal of DEI is to make sure everyone, not just one group, feels included and valued.?

By focusing on the bigger umbrella of Inclusion,? we can create opportunities for people from all walks of life.

Yes Shruti. Great article to know there is more to DEI then gender.

Shruti Swaroop Mam, very well articulated... Thank you mam. This is a powerful reminder that DEI is more than gender equality. With 1 billion people differently abled, jobs must be created to suit their needs, allowing them to work easily and feel accomplished. This can be achieved through technology and innovation in accessing machinery.
