DEI: Creating a Culture of Inclusion While Working Remotely
It's simple. Happy employees stay. And when employees feel empowered to contribute and see their contributions play out, they develop a sense of belonging at work. But how can we incorporate DEI in the workplace while working from home?
1 in 4 employees said they don't feel like they belong at their company, according to a survey done by?SurveyMonkey.
Let's Define Our Terms
Diversity?refers to the representation of a group at work. It can be defined as the state of being different regarding race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, age, etc.
Equity?refers to the equal opportunity for everyone on the team in each department to achieve success and earn recognition.?
Inclusion:?Refers to how well the input of others on the team is integrated into plans of action.?
Do a Diversity Audit
Diversity means more than having a rainbow of faces at your company. Do you have 60% Gen Zs, but they all make up the same department? Maybe overall, you have a decent representation of sexual orientation. How many of those individuals are in management or leadership positions??

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are more than buzzwords. They are action words.
Don't Try and Tackle it All at Once.?
Choose one challenge or metric to work on. Maybe your goal is to increase the age diversity in your HR department. Set a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-sensitive goal.
Use 1-on-1s to Build Trust With Your Employees.
In order to fill gaps, you need to identify what is missing.
Carve out time in your schedule for 1-on-1s. They help build trust between employees and supervisors and function to understand an employee's raw and honest experience. A video conference tool allows a supervisor and team member to meet virtually. Foster an environment where they feel comfortable speaking up, and they will.?
Invest in an Online Module Course?
Online modules can be fun. Invest in an interactive, educational DEI course for your leadership team and C-Suite to take. When leadership has the right attitude, it will help trickle down to the rest of the departments.
Implement a Task Force
Food will bring us together. Are there any excellent cooks on the team? Give everyone a chance to share an old family recipe or a meal from childhood. Invite them to host a virtual cooking class making one of their favorite dishes. Having a team member share knowledge is an excellent way to celebrate diversity while avoiding tokenism.?
