DE&I Highlights of 2023! ???

DE&I Highlights of 2023! ???

For me, December is a time for reflection. It's a chance to look back over the year at the conversations had, the lessons learnt and the milestones reached.

In 2023, I was fortunate enough to have many insightful discussions with thought leaders in and outside of the events industry around the significance of accessibility, cultural awareness, addressing gender disparities, diverse representation and presence in the decision making process when it comes to content, as well as the need for personal responsibility to support inclusive and equitable workplace cultures.?

With that in mind, for this weeks newsletter I'm sharing some of the most impactful guests and thought-provoking discussions I had in 2023...

?? PSA ??

BUT before I kick off, I need your help #eventprofs! Diversity Alliance ? are conducting a data project to learn more about your thoughts on DE&I in the workplace.

It's an important data study that will feed into a report we are delivering on the true impact of DE&I on recruitment, retention and culture.

All we ask is for a few minutes of your time to complete this survey - https://che3p6gk8xf.typeform.com/DiversitySurvey

*please note this survey is specifically for those who work in the events industry

Reflection 1: Embracing Cultural Awareness

I caught up with Natasha Butt (nee Layal) to learn about her journey reverting to Islam. For me the conversation showcased the significance of embracing different cultural backgrounds in our professional work environments.

?? Often, we unknowingly box individuals into predefined cultural categories based on stereotypes or superficial cues. Education is important to help expand our awareness and understanding. Dive into books, documentaries, and online resources to build this understanding!

?? We identified it's crucial for leaders and individuals alike to recognise that cultural awareness extends far beyond appearances or surface-level assumptions. It's about acknowledging the richness of diverse traditions, beliefs, and values that shape our identities.

??? Finally (and this goes without saying) if we witness discriminatory behaviour or prejudiced remarks towards different cultures, it's crucial to speak up and take action. Each voice raised against intolerance contributes to a more inclusive world.

Reflection 2: Addressing Gender Inequities

I had a brilliant discussion with Natalie Campbell MBE, co-ceo of Bleu water, Chancellor of the University of Westminster and independent candidate for London Mayor (Londoner's, go vote!) We dissected the issue of gender inequalities, which for me were further highlighted by the recent Equal Pay Day which fell on the 22nd of November illustrating the jarring reality—that women are essentially working for free until the end of the year due to the pay gap.

?? I was also shocked to learn that women must work an additional 16 years to attain the same pension as their male counterparts.

???? This is why elevating women into leadership and decision-making roles is an important step. A diverse leadership landscape not only demonstrates inclusivity but also leads a more balanced and equitable work environment, through diversity of thought in the decision making process.

?? We discussed how transparency and accountability play key roles in fostering change. Openly sharing salary data and information about pay structures is crucial in dismantling hidden biases and paving the way for fair compensation.

?? And of course, allyship is the key to dismantling these inequalities. We must stand together, amplifying each other's voices, and advocating for equitable treatment within workplaces. Male allies - speaking out cannot be overstated, your support and advocacy are integral in effecting change.

Reflection 3: ?Diverse Representation and Presence in Decision Making

Reflecting on my discussion with Alasdair Moore , one thing became abundantly clear—the crucial significance of diverse representation and inclusivity in content design and decision-making. Alasdair's insights emphasising the role diverse perspectives play in shaping content that truly resonates with audiences, resonated with me.

?? Alasdair also highlighted the risks of imposing our singular content ideas, sharing how this limitation stifles diverse perspectives, leading to stagnant conversations and predictable design. Embracing authenticity rooted in diverse experiences is the gateway to transformative storytelling. What do you think?

?? By creating spaces where authenticity thrives, embracing diverse voices and perspectives, we can foster an environment where creativity flourishes and innovation thrives.

Reflection 4: The Importance of Personal Responsibility

Through some of the conversations I've had, I've noticed there is an expectation that leaders should carry the torch of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts within the workplace. Often, we lean towards expecting guidance or direction from higher-ups, ignoring our own responsibility in fostering inclusive and equitable environments.

?? Thea Bardot 's insights highlighted to me the joint responsibility needed in cultivating inclusive workplaces. While #leaders, #HRprofessionals and #PeopleandCulture managers can look at policies for discrimination or bias, personal accountability is crucial for fostering inclusivity. Taking ownership of our actions contributes significantly to the collective progress toward inclusion and equity.

?? Embracing personal accountability and allyship can have transformative shifts that positively impact workplaces. Each behavioural shift, no matter how small, creates a ripple effect in shaping better, more supportive environments for all.
