Defy the Hustle: Prioritize Self-Care Now

Dear High Achieving Woman,

Self-care. It's a concept that evolves with our lives, isn't it?

I recently had a conversation with a single mom who manages her bustling life with grace. When I asked her about her self-care routine, her response was eye-opening: non-negotiable monthly getaways. Every month, she prioritizes time for herself. This summer, she's even embarking on a month-long retreat abroad. It's clear: she makes self-care a priority.

For many of us, self-care often takes a backseat. Life fills up with obligations—work demands, family schedules, and constant communication. In this whirlwind, where do you find yourself? What receives your focus?

The reality is, we often operate in reaction mode. We attend events out of obligation, serve on committees because we feel we should, and consistently put others' needs before our own. But this leaves us feeling stretched thin, perpetually guilty if we're not meeting everyone else's expectations.

How many times have you succumbed to the "I should," "I need to," or "I have to" mindset? It's a recipe for discontent.

So, how do we navigate this? How do we discern when to say YES and when to say NO?

It begins with your values. YOUR values.

Ask yourself: What truly matters to you? What are your desires, beliefs, and aspirations? It's about aligning with your authentic self, not societal pressures or familial expectations.

Reflecting on these values empowers you to make decisions rooted in authenticity. It's about reclaiming your agency and designing a life that resonates with your soul.

Yes, you may have been conditioned to believe in certain values. But it's crucial to recognize that you have the power to choose. Many of us have internalized values that don't serve our well-being.

I know this firsthand. I once believed it was my duty as a woman to sacrifice everything for my family. But this mindset led to burnout. Hair loss. Digestive issues. When you neglect your own needs, your body sends unmistakable signals.

Breaking free from this cycle isn't easy. It requires courage and intentionality. But it's also an act of self-love—a recognition that you are worthy of prioritizing.

Here are three practical tips to help you prioritize self-care:

Reflect on Your Values: Take regular moments to reflect on what truly matters to you. Write down your values and use them as a compass for decision-making. This clarity will guide you towards choices that honor your well-being.

Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to activities that drain your energy or don't align with your values. Establishing boundaries is essential for maintaining balance and preserving your vitality.

Schedule "Me Time" Monthly: Just like the single mom who takes monthly getaways, carve out dedicated time for yourself in your calendar. Whether it's a spa day, a solo adventure, or simply quiet time at home, make self-care a non-negotiable priority.

Remember, self-care isn't selfish—it's sacred. By prioritizing your well-being, you honor who you are as a child of God. You become a better woman, a better mother, a better leader. A better YOU.

Yes, it takes effort. But you are worth the effort.

Remember, your well being matters. Periodt.
