As the 91st Indian Air Force Day inaugurates on October 8, 2023, there is an evident sense of excitement and enthusiasm. Continuing with the thought of celebrating the IAF Day at different locations each year, Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) will witness the grand celebrations this year. The Air Force Day celebrations have already commenced on September 30, 2023, a week before, with an air display near Bhojtal Lake in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal witnessed IAF helicopters and Fighter Jets exhibiting aerobatic performances during the mega-event.
History of the IAF:
The Indian Air Force was formed under the then British India as the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) as a support force. The first flight came into existence on April 1, 1933, with four Westland Wapiti biplanes and five Indian pilots under the guidance of Royal Air Force (RAF) Officers and Air Soldiers. During the Second World War, the RIAF came into significant existence by playing an essential role and expanding substantially. The Indian Air Force dropped its prefix Royal after Indian independence from British rule in 1950.
After independence, between the 1950s and the 1960s, the IAF witnessed growth and modernization. Modifications and technological advancements made their way into its fleet with advanced aircraft, helicopters, and air defence systems.
Indian Air Force Day, 2023:
The 91st celebration of Indian Air Force Day began with an exhilarating air display in which nearly 50 aircraft from different airbases participated. The Akashganga team began the amazing air display by skydiving from a Mi-17 helicopter. Su-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, Jaguar, Kiran Mk II, Tejas, C-130 Hercules, IL-78, An-32, CH-47 Chinook, Mi-17, and Chetak flew in formation, demonstrating the IAF's professionalism and co-ordination. Another highlight was the aerial refuelling exercise, in which a Su-30 MKI refuelled an LCA and an IL-78 replenished a Mirage 2000 fighter. The locals near the area could experience the eye-captivating air display, followed by the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and the Su-30 MKI. A compelling mark was made by the aerobatic teams, Surya Kiran and the Sarang helicopter display team, as they exhibited an extremely coordinated and up-to-the-point air display.
With regards to these aerial performances, this year’s Indian Air Force Day being held at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, marks great significance since the MiG-21 will be performing for the last time as it will be bidding farewell at the 91st Indian Air Force Day celebration. The celebration is also noted to feature some new additions to the aerial display, such as the C-295 transport aircraft. During a press briefing, the Group Captain, Prajyot, gave us a few insights into the celebrations of the day. He declared that for the celebration this year, ten airbases will be hosting 120 fighter aircraft, including Rafale fighter jets and helicopters. The spectacular air displays for the same shall be held in the Sangam area, Prayagraj.

To provide a nostalgic touch, two vintage aircraft, Harvard and Tigermoth, will perform in an astounding Luv and Kush configuration during the parade over the Sangam area. Air Marshal RGK Kapoor articulated that the 91st Air Force Day will be held at Prayagraj this year, a change from the customary location in Hindon, Ghaziabad. This modification is done to ensure that the show can now be enjoyed by a larger audience from various regions.
