Fire Extinguisher Type & Their Uses

Fire extinguishers come in a variety of types, each with its own unique features and benefits.

In this article, we'll discuss 5 of the most common types of fire extinguishers and their Uses. Afterwards, we'll recommend which type is best for you based on your specific needs. So read on to learn more!

  1. Water- [Water mist, water spray]
  2. Foam
  3. Dry Powder- standard [ Dry powder, specialist]?
  4. Carbon Dioxide (co2)
  5. Wet chemicals extinguisher

Water Extinguishers-

A water extinguisher is commonly used to put out fires that are classified as class A. This type of fire involves organic material and paper woods, both of which produce a bright red flame. Water is written on a bright red label.

Do not use for Fires involving electronic equipment, kitchen, or Flammable gas.

Foam Extinguishers-

These are the most commonly used water-based fire extinguishers for Class B fires, but they may be used on class A fires as well. The Foam is written on a cream colour label. Use for Organic material, paper, cardboard, wood flammable liquids?(Paint and petrol)

Do not use for - kitchen fires, fires involving electrical equipment, flammable metal

Dry Powder Extinguisher?

Since they deal with class A, B, and C fires, stand dry powder extinguishers are also known as 'ABC' extinguishers. The powder word is written on the blue colour label. Use for Organic material, paper, Cardboard, woods, Flammable liquids?Ex paint and patrol, flammable gas LPG and acetylene

DO NOT USE IT FOR?Fire involving cooking oil, fires involving electrical equipment over 1000w?


Co2 Extinguisher?

These are the most common kind of fire extinguisher supplied in computer server rooms and are mostly utilized for electrical fire dangers. Kitchen fires, Combustible materials (Paper, wood, or textiles)

Do not use- Kitchen fires, combustible material, paper, wood or textiles? flammable materials


Wet Chemicals Extinguisher?

Class F fires, which include cooking oils and fats, require wet chemical extinguishers. The Wet Chemical is written on a yellow?colour label.Use for Cooking oil, fat fires etc.

Do not use for- Flammable liquids or gas fires, electrical fires, flammable metals

1. Fire Detection System- should be placed on each floor and 2-way communication should be established between the ground floor and other floors

2. Fire Alarm System- automatic fire alarm systems such as smoke and heat detectors are mandatory elements in international building codes.

3. Sprinkler System- basement, parking & other areas, where highly combustible things are stored, sprinklers must be provided.

4. Fire extinguishers-portable fire extinguishers should be installed in each corridor.

5. Signage Escape Route Map-maps clearly showing the route to escape should be provided in each corridor

6. Fire Drills- the residents should know where the emergency equipment is and what way to reach there. Also, they should know how to evacuate the building in the least possible time.
