The Definition of Franchise
I am staying with my theme, back to basics. This week, I thought maybe we'd have a little bit of a vocabulary lesson. As I was doing some research on what to talk about, I looked up the definition of the word franchise.? I have to be honest, it was very intriguing and really exciting, because it really is the right definition for me.?
History Lesson
Let me give you a little bit of a history lesson, “Franchise” actually comes from a French verb meaning to free itself from frank, again meaning free. So, frank is actually the origin of the English word “Frinc”, which is the French spelling and “Frank” which is the English spelling, its meaning is free, forthright, and sincere expression.?
It originally referred to a tribe of people who lived in what is now France, in the Middle Ages.? They gradually displaced the Romans over time, and their language and culture changed and mixed with the Romans and the local tribe.? At this point “Frank” actually lost all of its ethnic meaning and was referred to any inhabitant who is not a slave, giving the word franchise, meaning a frank, meaning a free person.
