Many people think that courage is not being afraid. I'm here to tell you, after our years of experience, that this is absolutely not true. Read on for the truth about entrepreneurial courage.
I've had my share of courageous moments in his life. I spent 18 years of my life in the Royal Australian Navy. I was deployed to the Middle East and was with troops on the ground in Indonesia when the tsunami hit. I always tell the team that courage was talked about a lot in the military, but when I tried putting that notion of courage into a business context… there were a few key things that were just that little bit different. Today, I want to share with you the three major components we’ve found of entrepreneurial courage.
Commitment
When it comes to entrepreneurial courage, you’ve got to be 100% committed. This means committed to your whole journey and especially to your team. If you only offer half-assed belief in your team, they’re going to do a half-ass job for you. If you’re not fully committed to your own product and service, and to the belief that it can deliver what it says it can… then you’re in the wrong career. To be an entrepreneur, you’ve got to be all in. If you’re not all in, then it’s going to be a really tough journey to success for you.
Doubt
Yep, you read that right! While doubt isn’t anyone’s favourite feeling, it’s an unavoidable part of being an entrepreneur, so you may as well get used to it! It’s sort of like being a parent. You’ve got plans for your child. You’ve got visions and you’ve got a good idea of the path you want their life to take, but no one ever really knows what’s going to happen. It’s the same in business. Especially with the way society and technology is changing and advancing so rapidly, we don’t know what the world is going to look like in the next two or four years. You’ve got to get comfortable with the knowledge that we can’t know all the answers. And that that’s okay! We want you to get comfortable living with the doubt and moving forward anyway.
Action!
You’ve internalised the first two lessons. You’re committed, and you’ve made peace with the doubt. The next step is to take action. And we mean massive action. We don’t want you to be a sprinkler or a scatter gun, we want you to be a fire hose! We want focused, single action that is zeroed in on what the next step towards success looks like for you.
That’s it. Those are the three things that are absolutely critical to have entrepreneurial courage. Now it can be lonely reaching this stage. In the military, they call it the loneliness of command. You often can’t talk to your team and tell them all the issues that are going on. You can’t talk to your family, because if they don’t have a business, they just won’t get it. So who can you talk to? Other entrepreneurs! This is where you need to build your network of other entrepreneurs, mentors and guides that you can bounce your ideas off.
