Let me take you back to February 1st, 2004 a month before the last race I would ever swim. My nutrition plan was in play, my event plan was in play and my sleep plan was exactly where it needed to be.??
Fast forward to February 25th, 2004, the last time that I would ever swim the 500 yard freestyle.? About three heats before I was set to go, I started crying, realizing that this was the very last time I was going to swim that race. I saw my coach had a panicked look on his face when he saw the emotion.? I dove in, swam the event, touched the wall and I was super disappointed.? It was one of the worst times I had ever swam in my adult life.??
The next day my 200 yard freestyle was another disappointing swim.? I didn’t know how to get myself out of it, because there was a lot of emotion knowing that this was my last meet and my final races of the events that I loved so much.??
The next day was the last time that I would ever swim the mile and I had another disappointing race. There was a lot of emotion behind every single time and I even remember shedding a tear in the pool during the race.? I touched the wall and it wasn't what I wanted.?

As I think back on those experiences nearly 20 years later, what would it have been like had I put a mental game plan together? Like I said, I had nutrition, I had sleep and I knew what I was going to swim. What I hadn't prepared for is what I could potentially go through mentally and what I went through mentally.?
Does this story resonate? Have you seen yourself there? Stay tuned to the three-part process of the things I wish I would have known in those moments, because this doesn't have to be you. You don't have to go through the mental anguish that can come with a disappointing performance.?
We'll talk about what I wanted success to look like, what I wanted to feel in those moments and what I could have done to think about what I just went through and reflect on it. When the next race came, I was better prepared to face what was coming.?
You've got this I'm right here with you.

3 年For team sports- which probably is quite a bit different- I learned that my basketball coach was exactly right. He said, “the scores, win streaks, and personal achievements will fade in your memory. What you will remember is relationships with teammates and how you built something together.” What makes your story so compelling is its relatability. How we perform in the big moment is tied to so many factors. The striving to maximize your performance is applicable to nearly everything I do. Really looking forward to reading your next installments.

3 年That it really didn't matter if I was 'too skinny to be a discus thrower' because I could throw the thing a really long way! In fact at age 59 and around 30 kilos heavier than I was back then I have finally achieved the optimal weight. I should plan a come back ????????
