Defining Roles, Driving Success: The Importance of a Strong Leadership Team

When you're in the process of change, the strength of your leadership team is critical. It doesn't matter if you're working a succession/transition plan, a major culture change or somewhere in between.?

The strength of your leadership team, including CEO (yes, if that's you, you're included), can make or break the success of the change you are making.?The stronger your leadership team, the greater the chance that your company will thrive as it emerges from the change process.?

And…?

It doesn't matter how strong your leadership team is, if their roles and responsibilities aren't clearly defined.?There is nothing worse for a strong leadership team than to not know who is responsible for what.

In one company, the CEO facilitated their exit to the board by hiring a CEO whom they knew through a major client.?However, the CEO they hired did not have CEO experience.?While nurturing a new CEO can be super beneficial to the future of your company, it can also fail miserably when you don't set clear expectations and nurture them accordingly.?

In the case of this CEO, they've been left to their own devices to figure things out.?This particular new CEO is so used to being more operations than CEO, that they micro-manage.?So much so, that when they hired a strong qualified COO, that COO left within three months.

Currently the leadership team and company is a bit of a mess and they believe that simply going through streamlining and organizing their processes is going to solve their issues.

Clear systems and processes are super important.?However, keep in mind that the success of implementation and change is dependent on having a fully functional and strong leadership team as well.?

This is why I've included "You have a strong leadership team with fully defined roles and responsibilities as it serves your future company" in "The Successful Leadership Transition Checklist"

?In case you're asking: What makes a strong leadership team?

While there are many qualities that make up a strong and highly qualified leader, the ones that are going to support your change the best are that they...

  • Are non-political and have the best interests of the company at the basis of their decisions
  • Interact well with those at all levels of the company
  • Are an excellent fit for their role and responsibilities.?It's important to have the right person in the right position.

When you look at your current leadership team, is it the right team to take your company into the future as a thriving business or are they more like Thing 1 and Thing 2???
