Defining Project success from day 1
Determining success is just as important at the start of any project as setting deadlines and budgets. Before proceeding, teams must establish measurable success criteria and determine who among stakeholders or customers will validate whether the project meets its goals. Without this clarity, even a well-executed plan can lead to misaligned expectations.
Keep in mind that a project is not truly finished just because the team has delivered something. Completion must be measured against predefined criteria functionality, performance, compliance, or specific business outcomes. These criteria should be agreed upon early to prevent last-minute changes or confusion about when the project is ready for handoff.
Ambiguous success criteria often lead to scope creep, where new demands emerge mid-project, stretching timelines and resources. By clearly defining success from the outset, teams maintain focus, ensuring that expectations remain aligned and deliverables meet the intended purpose without unnecessary expansion.
