What is a Problem ?

A Problem is simply a gap between the expectations & the current reality. There are 2 types : Technical Problems & Adaptive Problems.

Technical problems have a clear definition. Can be solved by anyone having domain knowledge. Adaptive Problems are complex with no clear solutions. Unpredictable & no readymade expertise available.

Diagnosing an Adaptive problem as a Technical problem is an example of the Classic Error that we all tend to make while defining a Problem. The process of defining a problem suffers as there is a tendency to always quick fix a problem with a sense of urgency. This can be unproductive. We need to spend time in defining the problem accurately. We need to see the Trees and also the Forest (Small & Big Pictures). A good problem solver has the ability to Balance the minute details while having an overall picture of the Problem in mind.

We can use the above framework as a Compass to guide us to the destination while Defining a Problem.

Developing the Mindset of a Problem Solver : Develop the mindset of inquiry & curiosity. While defining a Problem, we need to take into account all the people associated with the problem. Any Problem is clearly linked with the emotions, feelings & needs of the people. Empathy is the ability to see a problem through the eyes of other people and understand what they see, feel & go through as they experience it. Adapting a mindset of empathy - listening to people, observing them in their context, interacting with people & capturing relevant insights is important while Defining the Problem.

The right mindset keeps us motivated. We must befriend uncertainty. When the Problem is too complex we must not loose sight or get frustrated. We need be patient & hold steady & not give in to the pressure to come up with answers prematurely. Defining Problem is an exciting process of discovery. We must stay open long enough for the right answers to emerge.
