Defining Porn Addiction: Quantity vs. Consequences

As sex addiction treatment specialists like myself and Dr. Patrick Carnes have been stating and writing for more than a decade, when diagnosing and treating porn addicts the amount of porn a person uses is considerably less relevant than his or her porn-related consequences. In this respect, porn addiction is like substance use disorders, where it’s not how much you drink/use, it’s what drinking and using does to your life. New research published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine agrees. https://blogs.psychcentral.com/sex/2016/05/problematic-porn-use-quantity-vs-consequences/

Offering insight into any of the process addictions is a step in the right direction. Light into the darkness is the key to meaningful change. Doing away with shame and humiliation offer hope and the opportunity for healing.

I find this so applicable, I have a male friend who was seeking help to stop his pornography use which was causing him anxiety, shame, depression and affecting his relationship with his wife.He was told by the therapist that because the amount he is viewing wasn't considered problematic he didn't need treatment. I was very surprised to hear this assessment and I am glad to hear it is not the norm for helping those who want to quit pornography usage.
