Defining Mission vs. Vision
Two of the most essential aspects of organizational communications are the Mission and Vision statements. Those terms seem so similar and are often used interchangeably so it can be difficult to differentiate between the two. But each serve their own unique purpose to the organization, so it is important to get clarity on the intention behind each statement.?
Mission Statement
A mission statement is typically a short statement (a couple sentences max) that outlines what you do and how you do it. Your mission statement could also include brief specifics about where you are located or who you aim to help.
The key element is that it describes what you are doing today to solve the problem you exist to serve.
Vision Statement
A vision statement imagines the world of the future, perhaps even a future where the problem you exist to solve is no more. They work best when brief and memorable, serving like a rallying cry to gather people who want to be part of creating that change.

The Differences
1.????A mission statement represents the work you do today, a vision statement imagines how doing that work will change the future.
2.????A mission is concrete, focusing on what, who and how. A vision is inspirational, connecting audiences with why doing that work is important.
3.????A mission statement is a required tool for use with boards, volunteers and funders. It is not always written in public facing catchy language. A vision is not required, so it can be developed with external audiences in mind.
Now that you know the differences between the two statements, it’s time to reflect on your organizational message tools. Both a mission and vision statement are powerful tools for accomplishing your goals as an organization. Having well-crafted and well-understood statements will make future decisions and processes easier for everyone in your organization.
