Define Your Philosophy
I believe most people desire straight talk from their leaders. People need to know who you are, what you stand for, what you expect, and what they can expect from you. When a leader is inconsistent, he or she creates a culture of confusion and uncertainty.
Do your people know who you are as a leader? Have you ever defined and presented your leadership philosophy to your team? Are they operating with certainty because you have reinforced your vision, mission, and values with a clear picture of your leadership philosophy?
How Do You Define a Leadership Philosophy?
Step One
I will define my leadership philosophy in clear and concise terms, and I will expect my other leaders to do the same.
I will operate with an attitude of gratitude, and I expect you to do the same.
I will be a good steward of our corporate resources, and I expect you to do the same.
I will live in accordance with our company values, and I expect you to do the same.
I will contribute to our community, and I expect you to do the same.
I will be disciplined, dedicated, and determined in my actions, and I expect you to do the same.
I will be on time and mentally prepared to complete my mission daily, and I expect you to do the same.
I will work to assist our valued team members in reaching their most important goals, and I expect you to do the same.
I will operate with a servant's heart, and I expect you to do the same.
I will be authentic in my actions, and I expect you to do the same.
These statements are just a few parts of my own leadership philosophy. They define my philosophy and expectations clearly.
When you define your culture, the core values that you set for your company serve as a strong foundation for you to build your company on that can withstand growth, setbacks, and most importantly; the test of time. These clear-cut values will provide your colleagues and those you lead with the confidence, clarity, and certainty they need to proudly promote the beliefs of the company in every internal and external interaction they have. Defining your culture won't happen overnight. However, I want to provide you with the framework you need to clearly define your leadership philosophy and develop a winning company culture that you take pride in so that it can be reflected in anything and everything that you and your team pursues.
Step Two
Once you have your philosophy defined and written, share the result with all your team members. This will remove any uncertainty and give people a great understanding of who you are and what you expect.
Step Three
Live it out. You must live in accordance with the leadership philosophy you have defined. Leaders put their philosophy into practice.
Make a difference today.
