What is the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU)?

Mission

Background of Russian Radar Destruction

Back on December 31, 2024, Defense Intelligence of Ukraine announced that their soldiers / units had destroyed an air target using a Magura V5 maritime drone for the first time in the world (Ukrainska Pravda, 2025). What is a Magura V5 maritime drone? SeaWaves Magazine reports what the Magura V5 maritime drone is and its capabilities:

Maritime Autonomous Guard Unmanned Robotic Apparatus (MAGURA) V-type is a new generation multi-purpose unmanned surface vessel developed in Ukraine. It can perform a variety of operations such as surveillance, reconnaissance, patrol, search and rescue, mine countermeasures, marine protection, and combat missions.

The "National Industrial Portal" reported that "Special Techno Export", the Ukrainian state enterprise, developed the drone (MAGURA V5 Marine Drone Developed in Ukraine, 2025). Just two days ago on January 22, Defense Intelligence of Ukraine destroyed Russian satellite equipment in Russia's Kursk Oblast (Ukrainska Pravda, 2025).

What is the Russian Radar Technology?

The Russian radar technology that was destroyed is named the 1L122M 'Harmony.' This radar is an upgraded portable system that was intended for Russian airborne assault troops. The 1L122M 'Harmony' only weighed 30 kilograms . The 1L122M 'Harmony' consists of an antenna array, CPU, tactical display and a GLONASS receiver (1L122M Garmon, 2019). A GLONASS Receiver is a L-band radio processor capable of solving the navigation equations in order to determine the user position, velocity and precise time (PVT), by processing the signal broadcasted by GLONASS satellites (GLONASS Receivers, 2011). The 1L122M 'Harmony' was designed to detect and track up to three types of airborne targets simultaneously. It is capable of this even in heavy electronic countermeasures (ECM) environments. The Russian airborne assault troops tested six 1L122M prototypes in 2012 (1L122M Garmon, 2019).

What else did Defense Intelligence of Ukraine destroy?

During the attack, DIU scouts destroyed and damaged 53 Russian / enemy vehicles, 4 armored vehicles, 4 mortars, more than 50 UAVs, antennas and other communication equipment, and electronic warfare equipment of the Russian invaders. In addition, two Russian / enemy ammunition depots were destroyed. The DIU reported the following on their successful attack:

Targeted work on Russian engineering and fortifications continues - 200 were hit, 30 destroyed. Irreversible and sanitary losses of the Russian invaders during the specified period amounted to more than 130 people.

The servicemen of the 3rd Brigade of the Spartan Operational Task Force are credited with tracking down and destroying Russian communication antennas (Ukrinform, 2025).
