Acoustic Integrated Circuits ??
For the first time, scientists have developed an active way to control and modify surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on a chip electrically – a first step for eventually developing acoustic integrated circuits in the future.??
Historically, mobile phones used passive SAW filters to extract desirable signals. In a new study, researchers showed that SAWs could be actively managed in the piezoelectric lithium niobate by employing an electric field to vary its elasticity – thereby manipulating the phase, amplitude, and frequency of the SAWs.
The same technique could unlock a new generation of chips: acoustic integrated circuits – another example of the innovation wave hitting the space of integrated circuits. Acoustic integrated circuits work with sound waves featuring much shorter wavelengths than electromagnetic waves, thus allowing for ultra-compact chips – bringing intelligence to the edge.
Additionally, acoustic integrated circuits could play a role in quantum computing for transmitting information between qubits using phonons – the quanta of acoustic waves. Communicating information between qubits has remained a major challenge for quantum computing thus far.?
To determine the computing stack of the future, our head of research at Lunar, Lawrence,? is actively looking into this topic. Get in touch with him to discuss.
