DeepSeek’s AI Revolution: Is It Time for Lawyers to Adapt?

AI is transforming the legal industry, and the industry itself is changing rapidly. One of DeepSeek's platforms promises to change the way lawyers do research, review documents, and strategize their cases. Will it enhance your knowledge or make your position as a trusted advisor more difficult? With clients demanding faster and more cost-effective results, adapting technology may be necessary.?

The firm states that DeepSeek-R1 performs as well as OpenAI-o1 in math, coding, and reasoning tasks. The expectation is that this too is likely to improve over time.

AI can deliver through a simple prompt, providing a complex solution. It effortlessly analyzes requests, outlines the needed steps, generates the code, and provides a functional and working solution. These remarkable platforms demonstrate how videos of AI’s capabilities have surfaced on social media.

With billions in investment and expensive technology backing them, if U.S. Deep LLMs are outperforming DeepSeek, then the question must be raised: Were their investments worth the results?

DeepSeek's researchers stated they developed the platform for under $6 million and had to build their #LLMs under several constraining factors. Surprisingly, one of these challenges was limitations on the utility chips due to U.S. technological export restrictions to China. These restrictions and factors have posed a problem in the further development of AI.

This achievement allowed the West to gain more focus and was referred to as an AI Sputnik moment by an investor, Marc Andreessen. With this statement, he compared it to the technological leap of the Soviets putting a man into space.??

Understandably, people were in a panic, believing the US was the frontrunner in terms of generative AI. This is understandable because stock sell-offs have been recorded for various tech companies. This comes because of a tech company stock market panic.?

CEO Daniel Lewis said. I have read that it is less expensive than the major competitors but has not been tested, and its performance remains to be seen. We would be cautious about using a Chinese company’s technology because of potential covert associations with the CCP.

While I believe it can drive prices down substantially, which would be beneficial, it can be a bit too talkative for my taste,” said Tim Pullan, Founder of Thought rive.

Failing to launch new legal AI products at the same time as lowering the prices to train resources can result in dire competition risks. DeepSeek may not deliver the promised cost-efficiency if the limitations are exceeded.

Do you believe DeepSeek’s AI technology will change the way legal professionals operate, or will it introduce more challenges than benefits? Join the conversation and share your views in the comments.
