DeepSeek: A Cause for optimism or just geopolitical bias at play?

DeepSeek’s unexpected emergence has sent shockwaves through the industry, wiping $600 billion off NVIDIA’s market value Monday (it has recovered over $150b since then). The reason? Benchmarks show its Gen AI models performing on par with OpenAI’s while using a fraction of the compute/GPU power needed traditionally. Further due diligence is clearly needed to validate the results but the market reaction in my view has been over the top and perhaps driven more by geopolitical bias than by assessing the innovation on its merits. More technical information released by deepseek can be found here.

However, new reports suggest that OpenAI and Microsoft are investigating whether DeepSeek used OpenAI’s technology in a non-conformant way. If true, this could reduce the current excitement. Even then, this should not diminish the broader trends DeepSeek has been experimenting with:

  • Shift to price/performance principles: Cost-effective developments such as model distillation challenge the conventional wisdom that AI/Gen AI workloads are compute intensive and will always be.
  • Competition is good: Healthy competition benefits the consumers and, in the long run, the industry itself too (helps to grow the overall size of the market by driving costs down and subsequently encouraging adoption).
  • Innovation and adoption: New benchmarks in price/performance could drive faster adoption at scale but could also encourage new entrants reducing the monopolistic power of the existing dominant players.
  • Promoting sustainability: Reduced compute needs support on-going sustainability efforts.

On the other hand, DeepSeek’s ties to the Chinese Communist Party raise valid concerns around data privacy and censorship. However before assuming the higher moral ground, we should stop and ?consider the following: ?

  • Tech &?Politics: The recent presence of U.S. tech CEOs at Trump’s inauguration underscores a growing interconnection between politics and Tech giants which arguably does not sit comfortably with many citizens.
  • Data Privacy: Tech giants have long collected and monetized immense amounts of user data, and leaks like Snowden’s have revealed mass surveillance programs in the West as well.

DeepSeek’s decision to open-source its innovation may not be entirely altruistic but it is a step in the right direction towards more transparency, collaboration and democratization. More importantly, it’s an opportunity for established GEN AI companies to understand and improve upon DeepSeek’s achievements. After all, copying remains the first step in creativity??.

Only time will tell if DeepSeek’s rise marks a new era of Gen AI innovation. However we should all welcome the opportunity for the industry to pivot towards smarter, cost effective, greener and more accessible Gen AI to all.

Anything not shared is definitely lost in long term dimension. deepSeek as being open-source will not be an exception to pave the wave to innovation just like its predecessor technologies.

Thank you Adil. I must admit data privacy remains pretty much as one of my top level concerns when it comes to its consumption through genAI. In any case, it is always good to explore the capacities and performance or each genAI solution for various use cases, as well as how these differenciators evolve over time. I would be interested in knowing more about the differences of DeepSeek against it's competition, setting aside it's cost and limitations on data privacy.
