Deepfakes: Protecting Your Identity in the Age of AI
In the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats, a new menace has emerged – deepfakes. These AI-generated videos, capable of mimicking real people with startling accuracy, are no longer confined to Internet novelty or entertainment. They've infiltrated real workplaces, Zoom calls, and even financial transactions, posing a significant risk to our identities and security.
Have you seen Deepfake Tom Cruise, portrayed by impersonator Miles Fisher? AI technology is rapidly making it easier to create visual illusions that can distort our perceptions.
Deepfake Scams
Consider the chilling case of a finance worker in Hong Kong who fell victim to a deepfake scam, resulting in the transfer of over $25 million to fraudsters. The perpetrators posed as the victim's colleagues, using sophisticated deepfake technology to convincingly replicate their voices and mannerisms during a video conference call. Despite initial suspicions, the seamless deception led the victim to unwittingly comply with the fraudulent request.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the rapid advancements in deepfake technology and its potential for exploitation by cyber criminals. As the use of generative AI proliferates, we must arm ourselves with knowledge and strategies to safeguard our identities.

The moment I see Tom Cruise on a zoom call, that's when I automatically know that it's a scam because why would Tom Cruise contact me or the other way around, lol. I would ignore pretty much all celebrities except you Andy! :)

1 年Excellent article Andy Wang. We just had a client look up a customer service number for an internationally known retailer on Google. He typed the URL slightly wrong; it led him to an ersatz customer support department and the scam was on. Our client, who is more savvy than most his age, figured it out same day but had to run to the local bank and put fraud alerts on all his accounts because some access was given. He got lucky but I can see how many of the boomer generation make fat targets. Thanks for your excellent advice and…there is only ONE Tom Cruise!

1 年This is scarier than Sci Fi because it is real and happening now. I think about it all the time; how could someone pretend to be one of my children, etc.? Thank you for sharing some tips. I can only imagine in the future, as Technology will only advance, this will become an increasing threat.

1 年thanks for raising awareness Andy Wang - we always think we are clever and can avoid falling into those traps. but the quality of the scams is going exponential thanks to new technologies and unless we see and understand what is possible, and how it can happen, we are much likely to fall for it! AI has made these types of scams easy and economical to make and run - everybody is becoming a target!
