Deepest Winter

As we approach the Winter Solstice and the shortest, darkest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, we reflect on the words of French philosopher Albert Camus:

"In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger — something better, pushing right back.”

These words remind us of the light and resilience we hold within each of us, even during life's darkest moments. At a time when it feels as if the collective globe is approaching its darkest day, we are reminded of our capacity to hope, love, and push back with something better.

This sentiment has always been at the core of Resurgence's ethos, and, through a stance of radical love, active hope and striving towards justice for all our planet beings, we hope to radiate the light within even during Earth's darkest hours.

Connecting with plants and their ecology

Saturday 25 January 10.30am — Sunday 26 January 3pm

The Resurgence Centre, Hartland, Devon

Join us on this two-day course as we explore the cultural and ecological context of ‘weeds’ and ‘invasive’ plants and discover their beneficial properties.

The dominant narrative re plantae non gratae remains one of ‘othering’ and, often, war. This is increasingly being challenged and efforts are being made to positively reframe such plant beings. This might be due to a combined reflection of our collective evolution away from ‘power over’ dynamics to ‘power with’. This in-person short course is intended to support people who are curious about and interested in having more convivial relationships with plantae non gratae.

Early bird tickets available until 31 December

In the Dead of Winter, Life Begins Again

by Peter Abbs, Issue 312, January/February 2019

At the heart of Winter there is an all-but irrepressible impulse to believe in the continuation of being, a passion for renewal, the birth of new life.

Against the incoming dark, we light candles. We bring in the evergreen tree and cover it with presents and life-affirming symbols. On our gates and doors we hang wreaths, mandalas bright with holly berries, to attest to the unity of existence, the eternal cycle of return.

In the same spirit of avowal the poems gathered here celebrate the metaphoric moments of transformation, moments of hope, however simple, as the weather darkens and the year changes.
