There is a belief that the holiday season is about gifts and getting together with family over big meals. We decorate our homes to symbolize the festiveness of the season, the pageantry of the moment and the joy of connecting.
While all of those things may be true, it’s also important to understand there is a reason why this holiday occurs around December 22nd. Ancient cultures from around the world often tied their biggest feasts and festivals to this date as a way to celebrate the solstice. In the northern hemisphere, it was about the days now starting to get longer again from the shortest day of the year. In the southern hemisphere, it’s about the longest day of the year, and the joy of experiencing the length and warmth of the day. For those who kept the calendars, this was a sacred day, a holy day, or holiday because of how it differed from all other days. It was marked as an auspicious moment or a turning point that we should honor. It was a symbol of the cycle of life, a living reminder that we can re-generate and be born again based on how the heavenly bodies of earth and sun interact with each other.
You can do as the ancients and celebrate this moment as your own moment of transformation, to start anew and create a new life for yourself going forward. Don’t miss the meaning of this special season.
