VOLUME 15 / NOVEMBER 8TH, 2024

Welcome to another edition of the Deep Media Digital Digest! With the U.S. election now complete, AI-driven misinformation has proven to be a powerful force shaping public perceptions. This week, we take you through key advancements in real-time search, the evolving government partnerships we’re excited to announce, and some eye-opening insights into Deepfake activity.

What's On Our Radar

OpenAI has officially rolled out real-time search capabilities within ChatGPT for paid subscribers, with plans to expand access in the coming weeks. The new search integrates seamlessly into ChatGPT’s interface, using live web results to enhance responses with the latest information. ChatGPT’s real-time search is expected to elevate how users access immediate information—from financial updates to local recommendations—providing a seamless and ad-free alternative to traditional search engines.

In related news, OpenAI recently acquired Chat.com, redirecting users to ChatGPT’s services. This acquisition reinforces OpenAI’s ambitions to dominate the AI-powered search and chat landscape.

We’re also continuing our weekly “Real or AI-generated?” challenge on social media, where we invite our audience to test their skills in spotting AI-created images.

This week's image was AI-generated, underscoring the increasing difficulty in distinguishing real content from AI-generated media.

Deepfakes Dominating the Headlines

Deepfake activity surged throughout the election season. Our team recently identified a viral deepfake video circulating in Arizona that falsely implicated a former assistant to the Arizona Secretary of State in election fraud. This video, linked to a known Russian disinformation group, aims to sow mistrust and potentially disrupt polling activities. Read our in-depth analysis of this disinformation case here.

In financial news, our team flagged a deepfake video featuring Elon Musk endorsing a fraudulent cryptocurrency platform, a tactic aimed at leveraging his public influence to deceive viewers into scams. This instance highlights the broadening use of deepfakes beyond politics and the urgent need for comprehensive detection to counter synthetic financial scams.

Stay informed, stay vigilant, and reach out if you’d like to learn more about our detection tools or discuss our latest insights.
