Deep Listening Sessions

We love to talk.

We love to talk about us.

No wonder the most often used word in the English language is the word “I”.

I , me , myself is our focus most of the time whether it is work or our relationships.

No wonder we have conflicts, misunderstandings and issues.

How can we solve this deep seated problem ? We may be unable to change our fundamental nature but we can use a technique to make our ego become quiet do so we can truly understand the other person.

Deep Listening Sessions.

The goal here is a deeper understanding. Of colleagues, of family members, of bosses or anyone else with whom you interact.

How do we do it ?

We set up some time with them. It can be casual over a coffee or a formal feedback session. Call it whatever feels comfortable.

In this session you cannot talk. You can only listen. Except for asking some short questions.

How are you ? how are you doing ?

Whats good in life ?

Any concerns or issues that you are struggling with ? anything you want to share ?

Any feedback on any areas of work in general ?

Now I want to get feedback from you …can you tell me how I am doing at work ?

How am I at collaboration with others ?

Do I appreciate you ?

What do you like about me ?

What do you not like about me ?

Did I do or say anything that upset you ?

You can add to this list. Aim is to ask and listen. Not to respond or justify or explain.

The one golden rule is “ you cannot talk except ask questions”

Practice this with someone you are comfortable with.

Do it as part of an appraisal or a mid year review

Do it with your spouse and call it a marriage mid year appraisal or feedback session

As you start doing it you will start to develop the capacity for deeper listening and understanding.

You will develop your sense of compassion, kindness and deeper understanding.
