2. Commentary: Deep dives series, part 1/3—At the core of sustainable ecosystems: judgment, uncertainty, and value”

"The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in value."—Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States, 1907

At the core of our natural environments lies the development of the ecosystem services paradigm that helped us improve our understanding of how nature influences?societies and matters to humans.?

Natural ecosystems provide many beneficial services, including water supply, nutrient recycling, habitat for plants and animals, flood control, and more. It is critical to consider both the value of the development and the value of the services that may be lost during the decision-making process about human activities.?

/ Corporate sustainability

“You know how all corporate sustainability reports have three “pillars” and desperately try to convince you that all the company does is work on saving the world? Maybe that’s not a good sign of meaningful commitment. (Nor are the mandatory photos of smiling women in hard hats, for that matter ??).”—Alison Taylor.

“Genius is gendered. Ten years ago I wrote an invited essay, as part of a series, on what would be different if Steve Jobs were a woman.

As the Twitter takeover has been in the news, I thought it might be useful to take a look back at hypermasculinity in tech. Back then, Bill Gates was allegedly happily married.”—Gillian Marcelle
