In a memorable 2018 statement, the Retired Four-Star Admiral and Navy SEAL, William McRaven, after serving as Chancellor of the University of Texas, said, “The toughest job in the nation is the one of an academic or health-institution president.”? This was said by the person whose previous post had him serving as chief of America’s Special Operations Command that planned and supervised the capture and death of Osama bin Laden.
In the years since, the job of campus president has become even more difficult as the pandemic, a demographic cliff, the economy, and technological innovations have challenged higher education enrollments, finances, and attractiveness.
It is instructive, then, to consider books by university presidents as a lens on the field of higher education as a whole and on leadership styles during periods of challenge. Some books are autobiographical, others are memoirs of key moments, and still others are like documentaries in their scale and scope.
In this case, "City of Intellect" by former Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks is a panoramic documentary of the history and challenges of the institution we call "university." Click the link here: https://search.app/XoemXCFEc4j6dUXX9
