1. Deep Breathing: a. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose for a count of 4. b. Hold the breath for a count of 4. c. Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth for a count of 6. d. Repeat this pattern for 5 cycles or until you feel your heartbeat slowing down.
2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: a. Start with your feet. Tighten the muscles in your feet for a count of 5 and then release. b. Move up to your calves. Tighten for a count of 5 and then release. c. Continue this pattern, moving to your thighs, buttocks, stomach, chest, arms, hands, neck, face, and scalp. d. As you release each muscle group, imagine it becoming warm, heavy, and relaxed.
3. Guided Visualization: a. Imagine yourself in a serene place, like a beach, forest, or meadow. b. Visualize the details: the sound of waves or rustling leaves, the scent of the sea or the woods, the feeling of sand or grass beneath you. c. Imagine yourself taking a walk in this environment, letting all worries wash away with each step.
4. Mindful Awareness: a. Bring your attention back to your breathing. Notice the rhythm, the rise and fall of your chest or belly. b. Pay attention to how your body feels against the surface you're on. c. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your focus back to your breathing.
5. Gratitude Reflection: a. Think of three things you're grateful for today. It can be as simple as the air you breathe or the bed you're lying on. b. Reflect on each one, allowing feelings of gratitude to replace any remnants of stress.
