A Deep Dive Into Luxury Hotels, Low-Cost Carriers and MakeMyTrip

Happy New Y-... err, actually, I think we are past the statute of limitations to ring in 2025. But the same rule doesn't apply to our 2025 Travel Outlook which remains timely. I presented the core ideas live on stage at our NYC Megatrends event which you can now access online.

One of the big themes I heard at Megatrends was the importance of artificial intelligence for travel in 2025. The stand out talk to me was travel investor, Thomas Reiner, who thinks that AI is poised to shake up search, and by extension, the entire travel industry. I am still processing the implications of our conversation and it’s worth your time to take a listen as well.

Meanwhile, at our London Megatrend event, Skift Senior Research Analyst Pranavi Agarwal sat down with Sarah Doyle of Design Hotels to discuss how luxury hospitality is being redefined for a modern consumer. As it just so happens, this is one of the many topics covered of our latest research report, A Deep Dive into Luxury Hotels.

Luxury has been hot since the pandemic. It is one of the fastest growing hotel segments and consumers continue to splurge on high-end travel experiences. But, as Senior Analyst Robin Gilbert-Jones points out, luxury is an evolving concept. While traditionally associated with high price-points, opulent suites, and white-glove service, modern luxury has a growing experiential and wellness component. It’s important that brands which want to stay relevant in an ever more crowded luxury market adapt to meet these needs.

Not every trip can be a luxury journey. Sometimes, we just need to get from point A to point B as quickly and cheaply as possible. Budget airlines do exactly that. They’ve been so successful at offering cheap flights that, in his latest report, Airlines Analyst Ashab Rizvi believes these low-cost carriers are shaping the future of leisure travel. Operators in this market have ambition. Nowadays budget carriers want a piece of the lucrative long-haul and premium airline markets. And they stand ready to make big changes to long-standing business models to make that happen. May the best airline win.?

Finally, to round out a very busy January, we have a new company profile out on MakeMyTrip.? India might just be the most important emerging travel market in the world and MakeMyTrip is the nation's leading online travel agency with more than 50% share of the local market. This chartbook, by Senior Analyst Pranavi Agarwal, features nearly 40 charts on MakeMyTrip’s financials and comparison with peers, providing a succinct but comprehensive overview of the Indian OTA market. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in travel in India.?

That’s all for now. Drop me a note if you have any questions. I’d be happy to chat – [email protected].

Best,
