Deep Dive

Deep Dive

Seeing as it’s Friday, I thought I’d go down a different route today.

And I figured I’d go down a more personal front. I don’t normally like talking about myself, but it’s probably not a bad idea if people know a bit more about me away from DPM.

So if this has no interest for you, then no hard feelings if you hit delete now.

But if you’re still here, I figure if I give you a bit more of an idea that I’m not just another one dimensional trainer who only thinks about push ups and counting my macros.

Obviously, there’s a lot more to life than those.

If you’re not familiar with why I started DPM, it all stems from after my dad died suddenly back in 2005.

It give me a real kick up the arse as I’m sure you can imagine as I wasn’t really doing much with my life at that stage.

Was even contemplating going back overseas again and working in Canada and coaching rugby or something like that.

Then that changed things.

I stayed home and ended up in a job interview making it down to the final two. I was still undecided about whether I wanted the job – which wasn’t in fitness, or to take the plunge and back myself and start a business.

In the interview I remember thinking I hope I don’t get the job cause I decided then and there that I wanted to back myself and give it a go.

A few months later I was starting to build a few clients and even met my now wife Bronwyn at a friends wedding.

Life comes at you fast.

16.5 years later and here we are.

Fast forward to now, away from the business, my main priority is obviously my family and 2 girls – Emily (8) and Jade (4) and being a dad who’s present.

I figure there’s relatively a few years I have where it’s cool to hang out with your dad and not just seen as an ATM.

So it means I’ve turned down training opportunities (including one this year from a high profile person) when it conflicts with that time.

It is what it is.

I’ve got more time later to earn more money. I don’t need to live on the biggest house on the street. So long as I can pay my bills and have a bit of a life I’m good.

Anyways, away from all that, when I get time to myself, you can find me watching basketball or the footy.

Ideally with a nice red (or three) or a whisky.

However, on that, I know I must’ve been a prick in a past life to end up a Parra fan in this life.?

But if I’m basing my happiness on whether my footy team wins or loses at my age, then I really need to reassess my priorities.

Other than that, I love watching a series or three at a time. Now it’s Obi Wan Kenobi and rewatching NYPD Blue in it’s entirety.?

Almost like the Peppa Pig book that Emily had as a baby when one of the pages was “My daddy says he loves working out, but his favourite exercise is lifting the remote control”.

Not exactly the truth, but there’s a hint of it I guess.

And hobby wise? If that stuff doesn’t count, then over the last few years, I’ve really gotten into basketball cards again. Buying and selling those and watching what the market is doing with those is a bit of fun.

I also like reading before bed each night. It switches my mind off so I can go to sleep straight away most nights. Right now I’m nearly done with one of Phil Jacksons books (the old NBA coach) 11 Rings which is a good insight.

Either those type, or I really like the Jack Reacher books.

Hopefully that gives you a bit of an insight into me on a personal level and not come across as to self indulgent.

I figure that if you know more about me, it’ll hopefully give someone who may be thinking about joining DPM a bit of an idea that I’m not just some one dimensional goose, and that I actually have a life outside of here.

And maybe it’s even someone who you can actually relate to.

Anyways, have a good weekend, and back to normal next week.

Cheers,

Daniel
