Deep Cleaning Your Kitchen Counter

Deep Cleaning Your Kitchen Counter

If your kitchen counter cleaning routine consists of swiping a sponge every few days, you could have a serious germ build-up you aren't even aware of. Because your kitchen counter is likely your main meal prep area, proper sanitation is critical for food safety.

Read on for tips on cleaning each type of counter surface.

Marble. Luckily, marble is pretty easy to clean. The recommended solution for maintenance cleaning is a solution of warm water and non-abrasive dish soap. Avoid acidic cleaners, even natural ones like vinegar and lemon juice, as those may eat away at your stone surface.

Granite. Similar to marble, granite countertops need only mild dish soap, warm water, and a soft, non-abrasive towel. If you want to disinfect the surface after cleaning, swipe with isopropyl alcohol.

Tile. While tile can be easily cleaned with soap and water, keeping your grout fresh is another story. To really sanitize and reduce staining in your grout, turn to a scouring powder with bleach.

Stainless steel. These sleek, industrial-looking surfaces need nothing more than a sprinkle of baking soda and a swipe of vinegar. In addition to cleaning with soap and water on a daily basis, try the baking soda and vinegar trick once a week to keep your counter shining.

Wood. Wood counters classically come in the form of the butcher block counter, which can offer a beautiful rustic vibe - but they stain easily and can be tough to keep clean. First, scrub your countertop with warm water and mild dish soap. After you fully rinse the soap residue away, follow up with a spray bottle of straight white vinegar to sanitize. Let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes and wipe with a damp, clean towel.
