Deep Casing Tools Launches New Style of MechLOK? Drill Pipe Swivel
Aberdeen based technology development company Deep Casing Tools launches new style of MechLOK? Drill Pipe Swivel, the MechLOK?-T.
Introduced in 2019 the MechLOK? Drill Pipe Swivel offered a solution to an ongoing challenge within the oil and gas industry where extended reach drilling (ERD) wells have become longer and more extensive, making it harder for operators to reach desired target depths.
The MechLOK? tool can be run on any string where potential problems exist in reaching target depth due to frictional issues, typically in long, horizontal ERD wells. A drill-string deployed swivel tool, it facilitates the rotation of the drill pipe above the liner in an ERD well, reducing drag, redistributing friction, and mitigating helical buckling of the work-string. ??
David Stephenson, CEO at Deep Casing Tools said, “What makes the MechLOK? stand out from other, conventional technology within the industry is its ability to lock either left or right, enabling it to effectively cater to many well operation scenarios. Once locked, the tool can be rotated to the right or left, in compression or tension.”
In January this year, the team launched the MechLOK?-T, a new style of the MechLOK?, offering additional benefits to global operations. This includes the ability to swivel in tension as well as in compression, reducing friction when run in and pulled out of hole. Advancements in the tools locking procedure too has proved beneficial.

Eoin Wood , Global Sales and Marketing Manager said, “The unique technology behind the tool has enabled it to lock at any time using a quick and reliable two step mechanical locking procedure that is independent of drill string hydraulics. This new procedure makes it extremely difficult to lock accidently, a huge advantage to our clients.”
The MechLOK?-T is already in high demand following its successful run in Norway earlier this year.
“Although we’ve improved the tools operational performance, the functionality of the tool widely remains the same. Current functionality allows the reset and rerun of the same single tool several times. This was advantageous on the run in Norway where the same tool was successfully run in all three legs of a highly directional tri-lateral well. It swivelled in both tension and compression and was successfully locked as verified by NOV’s i-Con downhole data sub.” Eoin said.
Momentum for the tool remains high with future runs lined up within the UK and Norwegian North Sea where the MechLOK?-T will be utilised to combine lower completion deployment with wellbore clean up. ???
