Deconstructing the Man Behind Demolition and Pyrotechnics

Many of our clients know Black & Veatch for building critical infrastructure, so it may come as a surprise to learn that we also dismantle structures. That's where our Decommission and Demolition Lead Manager comes in.

When clients need assistance decommissioning or demolishing their old plants, Brian Colson and team provide guidance on the best course of action. Market conditions, regulations, environmental impact - there's much to consider before deciding to make things go 'boom'.

{You can learn more about the the intricacies of the demolition process in our guide to coal closures here.}

Brian’s love for demolition goes far beyond his work at Black & Veatch, though. He also entertains his own network of audiences with celebratory explosions of the 'ooh' and 'aah' variety.

For the last 10 years, Brian has been a licensed professional public display fireworks technician, putting on elaborate firework shows up and down the East Coast.

Although his business is - quite literally - booming at this time of year, he took the time to share some firework safety tips for anyone looking to get in on the action.

Top 5 Firework Safety Tips

Before you attempt any Independence Day fireworks of your own, our expert asks that you take steps to ensure the safest experience possible:

1. Make Storage Your Top Priority

When you get home from buying your fireworks, make sure you store them in a cool, dry and dark place. Sunlight can ignite fireworks.

2. Secure Your Foundation

Make sure everything is anchored to the ground when you set up your fireworks display.

3.  Ignite in Twos - Max!

Light no more than two fireworks at the same time. This will allow you enough time to distance yourself from the launch site.

4. Be Prepared for Mishaps

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher garden hose or some form of water supply in case of a fire.

5. Always, Always Wear PPE

Always ensure you are wearing the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes a face shield, hard hat, and either cotton or flame resistant (FR) rated clothing.

If you decide to leave things to the professionals - that's okay, too! The most important thing is to make sure you have a safe and happy Independence Day.

A Final Q&A With Our Demolition Manager

What’s the strangest job you’ve ever had, and what did you learn from it?  I’ve been working in the demolition field for about 30 years. One time, I demolished a bomb testing facility for the Naval Surface Warfare Center — it was the definition of a complex job. It taught me to never underestimate a structure to be demolished.

What accomplishment gives you the most pride? I love to hear the cheers and applause after a successful implosion or fireworks show. As long as it’s in a safe context, many people love to watch something blow up.

What sport would you play if you could? I wish I played football. I’m a power lifter and I work out every day.

What’s your hidden talent? I can make people laugh.

What’s a skill you are great at — and another you wish you had? I’m outstanding at giving a pep talk when it’s needed, both to myself and others. And if there was one skill I wish I could improve, it’s my typing.
