Deconstructing Bias Through Acknowledgement

Deconstructing Bias Through Acknowledgement

As a licensed architect in both Ontario and Mexico with almost two decades of experience, Director, Sr. Practice Lead, Architecture, Ana-Francisca de la Mora C., is recognized for her innovative, high-quality?designs. Her work exhibits a deep commitment to creating healthy spaces that are accessible and inclusive.?

As our sixth spotlight of?#WomenofIBI in honour of International Women’s Day and Women’s History month, Ana-Francisca discusses how acknowledging our own biases is the first step towards deconstructing them. Having a refined lens in inclusive design and the value of welcoming environments, she reflects on the growth she has witnessed for women in the industry and shares her advice to women beginning their professional journey.?

Creating impactful and inclusive spaces can be achieved through mindful design, but an equal amount of effort must be put forth by individuals residing within those spaces. Ana-Francisca ruminates on the positive changes she has witnessed within organizations that have allowed for inclusive environments to flourish.

“The main one is the acknowledgement that we are all biased. I also appreciate when people speak up when something is inappropriate. Letting others know the impact of a comment or an action can slowly bring awareness and create the inclusive environment we all want.”

Ana-Francisca further explains how participating in on-going conversations about covert biases and boundaries within an organization has aided her own professional development. She expresses that collaborating in an environment that values gender inclusivity has accelerated her creative growth.

“I don’t have to second-guess if the response to a situation is based on other external factors besides my professional performance. It gives everyone confidence that we are all acknowledged based on our capacity and potential."

"An environment that values gender inclusivity allows me to be exposed to innovative ideas that push me to grow and think more creatively.”

As she continues to shape spaces to incorporate inclusive, accessible design elements, Ana-Francisca provides her advice to women beginning their professional journey.

“I want them to feel hopeful and tell them that no matter how hard it may seem, they should not let others’ stories define their story. Find role models and as many mentors as possible in various organizations and from different backgrounds and genders. Each person has a gift, advice, or a resource they can give you. Make sure you give back!”
