DECODING WIFI CALLING

DECODING WIFI CALLING

Consider a scenario. Your office is located in a poor cellular connectivity zone. Your executives are unable to make sales calls or connect with clients and business partners on the phone. How do you overcome this communication challenge? Short answer: By opting for WiFi Calling.

WiFi calling is emerging as the latest talking point in the telecommunications space. It is enabling users to make calls over the internet - without downloading any smartphone application or calling platform - instead of being solely reliant on cellular networks.??

How is WiFi calling propelling a global communication revolution? By keeping people constantly connected and completely disrupting the pricing structures of long-distance calling. Now, even if a user has low network signals and a strong WiFi connection, they can make calls over the same cellular network, and communicate seamlessly. WiFi calling is making audio glitches a problem of the past.?

As organizations moved towards a remote work setup during the pandemic, they became increasingly acquainted with this new technology that dramatically reduced dependence on cellular networks for smooth communication.?

If you’re not sure about how WiFi calling works, read on to put your doubts to rest.?

What is WiFi Calling??

For a lay user, WiFi calling works just like any other regular phone call. However, there is a lot more than what meets the eye. WiFi calling routes phone calls through an internet network instead of cellular service.?

While regular calls on the 4G network work on VoLTE (voice over LTE), if the network is unavailable or of bad quality, this service will switch to an internet connection in order to maintain better call quality. While a lot goes into making this happen, for the subscriber, it is quite effortless, and of course, at no additional cost!

Both Apple and Android devices support WiFi calling. Think of it as making a WhatsApp call but via your regular network, without having to download any VoIP-powered application.??

How WiFi Calling Works?

WiFi Calling empowers smartphone devices to automatically zero in on the strongest network to connect a call. This could either be cellular or a WiFi network. WiFi Calling doesn’t necessarily mean that all calls are routed through WiFi. This only happens if the WiFi network is stronger than the cellular network.?

Most carriers treat WiFi calls in the same way as regular calls and no additional fee is charged to use the feature.

VoIP vs WiFi Calling: What’s the difference??

WiFi calling may be causing a buzz in the telecommunication space, but the technology that powers it – VoIP – has been around for a long time.??

VoIP and WiFi calling, however, have one fundamental difference. VoIP usually refers to an installed application or platform that powers smartphones to use the internet to make calls. WiFi calling, on the other hand, is a carrier-branded calling that is automatically available in WiFi calling-complaint handsets and 4G SIMs. Enable the setting on your phone, and you’re good to go with your WiFi calls.

Advantages of Wi-Fi Calling

There are several reasons why Wi-Fi is the way forward. It allows users to communicate from remote locations, as long as they have a strong internet connection. Here are some advantages that it brings to the table:

  • WiFi calling does not use up your data. So while you can make calls anywhere across the world, you still get to save your data.
  • There is no need to install any additional software or hardware to gain access to WiFi calling. You can easily use WiFi calling from any compliant personal device.
  • If you are in a poor connectivity zone, you don’t need to struggle with audio glitches while making calls. WiFi calling improves voice quality in areas of network dark spots.
  • A constant search for a cellular network is one of the biggest reasons that drain a smartphone’s battery. With WiFI calling, you enjoy an extended battery life.
  • Enjoy crystal clear call quality and forget about call drops. WiFi calling also ensures that you stay connected always, and get seamless and extended indoor coverage.

Internet Telephony: The future of telecommunication?

Any telecom expert will tell you that internet telephony will be the primary calling method in the coming years. We’ve already seen VoIP providing hybrid work options for business. Internet telephony is set to gain the same traction, allowing businesses to enjoy seamless communication and collaboration while working remotely.?

Ruchir, I think you made some good points. However, the disadvantage of Wi-Fi Calling is the user needs to connect to the Wi-fi access and possibly need a password. What are your thoughts on Wi-fi systems that provide a seemless experience for wi-fi calling by allowing behind the scenes authenticated telecom user IMSI to place Wi-FI calls seamless without interfering in the other UE functions.
