Decoding Successful Digital Transformation

Much had been said and read on this topic - In this article I would like to share my perspective on People Element of Digital transformation.

I am not an expert on this topic but with my day in day out conversations with Leaders responsible for Digital transformation, gave me some anecdotes that can be collated here.

The now accelerated form of Digital transformation that has been around for almost a century in a more dormant form, has put the focus on various Benefits and Challenges it brings along.

Besides being an imperative, evident growth proponent through providing competitive edge, Improved efficiency, productivity, Cost factors, Data Insights etc Digital Transformation has heightened but subtle challenges for successful implementation.

From Strategic layouts to last mile implementation it is still driven completely by People, which may not remain the case for long.

Let us look at how the people factor impacts the entire journey and we will take this through each levels - Leadership, Managers, Executives ( tech and non tech resources ).

Leadership - While leadership remains as committed and driven as possible - to deliver successful adoption throughout the value chain they too face immense headwinds. Some known challenges are continuously changing Business Priorities, Budget constraint, Risk Factors of Investment, Tech trends, Skilled resources, fear of untraversed territories, Success Measurement metrices, compliance, security, speed to stay ahead of incumbents and more makes decision making more complicated.

Managers - while they do the most of piecing together for successful implementation and impact but their visibility/alignment of Vision and multiple similar programs across the organization remains limited, leading to disorientation of Manager level. Not getting required support or involvement of stakeholder internally is another challenge. Some projects don't meet their desired end and are left in silos never pieced together leaving Managers feeling let down.

Executives - Closing smallest of gaps at root level in digital transformation projects - executive carry enormous amount of data that can be leveraged in moving up through the challenges, but so is the challenge of non structured and missing data. The anxiety of unforeseen changes, Jobs, Skills etc can easily be fixed by continuous upgradation.

While we can take some learning from Change Management but nuances to Digital transformation projects requires more experts and stakeholders collaborating from all levels of corporates and ecosystem player such as startups, enterprises, Investors, Academia and Governments in exchanging their learnings.

If you are part Digital Transformation/ Innovation teams in your organizations - Do share your thoughts.
