Decoding Project Metrics: What Executives (and Relationships) Really Care About

Executives don’t need a flood of charts, complex KPIs, or vanity metrics—they need clear, actionable insights that drive business decisions. The key to effective project reporting is focusing on what truly matters: value, risk, and strategic impact.

Instead of overwhelming leadership with task completion rates or hours logged, translate metrics into business outcomes.

  • Are we delivering expected ROI or benefits?
  • How are projects managing risks and seizing opportunities?
  • Is the portfolio aligned with strategic priorities?

Metrics like benefit realization, cost-to-value ratio, and risk-adjusted performance speak the language of decision-makers.

A great project leader doesn’t just track progress—they connect execution to impact. By framing project data around growth, efficiency, and competitive advantage, you shift the conversation from “Are we on schedule?” to “Are we delivering results that matter?”

But here’s where psychology comes in: decision-making—whether in the boardroom or in relationships—is driven more by emotion than logic. Studies in behavioral science show that people make choices based on trust, perceived value, and emotional connection. Executives, like all of us, lean toward decisions that feel right, not just ones that look good on paper.

Just like in business, relationships—whether professional or personal—thrive on meaningful connection, not just status updates. It’s not about how many meetings you’ve had or reports you’ve shared; it’s about trust, alignment, and delivering on commitments. Neuroscience confirms that trust and emotional safety activate the brain’s reward center, reinforcing stronger bonds. Strong relationships, like strong projects, succeed when there’s clear communication, shared goals, and a focus on long-term value.

Executives care about outcomes, not outputs. The same is true for great partnerships.

This Valentine’s Day, whether you’re leading a project or strengthening a relationship, ask yourself: Are you focused on what truly matters—or just checking boxes?

I think where many of these "insights" get off track is with dirty, incomplete data. Many companies, when migrating to new software or systems, try to get out of the hard work of cleaning up their data. AI will of course generate results, reports and recommendations very quickly. But if those reports and recommendations are based on inaccurate data the results may take you down the wrong path.
