Decoding the Principles of Great Management

There are certain universal principles of great management that are applicable irrespective of the industry or your position in the hierarchy.?

These principles determine the smoothness of operations in any enterprise while directly affecting other benchmarks like employee productivity, motivation, retention, and even profitability.

Probably the most important principle to remember is regarding the functions of management. At the most basic level, management is a discipline consisting of a set of 5 general functions, which are, planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling. As a manager, a deep understanding of these functions will help you focus efforts on activities that deliver good results.?

Secondly, the organizational structure is another important aspect that drives the business forward. Understand this structure well enough because every manager plays three main roles in this structure - decisional, interpersonal, and informational.?

Resource allocation and its management is another principle that falls under a manager’s purview. They are expected to operationalize the organization’s strategic plan by allocating resources where they will make the most impact.

Effective managers understand the importance of emotional intelligence in maximising human potential. They have a deep understanding of the competencies in each dimension of emotional intelligence - high self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, and good social skills.

Lastly, as a manager, you should align your career goals to your organisation’s vision, mission, strategies, structure, and culture. This will not only ensure that you operate with maximum motivation and productivity but also provide you with greater job satisfaction and career success.
