As leaders, we face countless experiences daily that are deeply entrenched in various aspects of our being—physical, imaginative, emotional, mental, and unconscious. However, we often fail to investigate the underlying causes of these experiences or even acknowledge their existence. To become wise leaders, we must embark on a journey of self-discovery, exploring the unique world we have defined for ourselves and understanding how we create, promote, and allow our experiences.
When faced with the question, "Why is this happening?" we tend to engage in self-inquisition rather than self-inquiry. Self-inquisition involves harshly questioning ourselves, often with judgment based on our preconceived beliefs of right and wrong, good and bad. While this approach may provide some answers, it fails to dive deeper into the root causes of our experiences. In contrast, self-inquiry, when practiced with self-empathy, allows us to take the essential next step—self-reflection.
Self-reflection, infused with self-compassion, is the process of thoroughly examining the insights gained from self-inquiry. It enables us to develop a deep understanding of the sources and impacts of our experiences. By engaging in self-reflection, we unearth the underlying causes of our experiences and learn valuable lessons, laying the foundation for the emergence of wisdom. This introspective practice fosters personal growth and emotional intelligence and helps us feel understood and supported in our journey.
Cultivating leadership wisdom requires being fully present and attentive when connecting with our unconscious, nurturing meaningful self-connections. By engaging in contemplation or deep listening, leaders develop intuitive insights and become better prepared to navigate complex leadership challenges. When practiced with compassion, deep listening contributes to personal growth and emotional intelligence.
Wise leadership also involves embracing uncertainty and being open to new possibilities. Vulnerability guides us to tackle our fears head-on, and uncertainty and vulnerability become partners in our wisdom development. Openness does not mean becoming passive or giving power away; rather, it means being receptive to new ideas and perspectives, which opens our internal wisdom connections.
Wisdom moments, the "A-ha!" realizations that arise from this process, are transcendent and occur when leaders apply their newly acquired self-awareness, understanding, and deep listening skills to create significant positive change. Embarking on this journey of self-discovery empowers leaders to become more compassionate, loving, and successful, capable of making a positive impact on their organizations and communities.
